The Challenge

The SNAP Challenge encourages participants to experience what life is like for millions of low-income Americans living on the average daily allowance of only $4.01! Challenge participants are forced to make food shopping choices on a limited budget, and often realize how difficult it is to avoid hunger and  afford nutritious foods.

While living on a food stamp budget for just a week cannot come close to the struggles encountered by low income families week after week and month after month, it does provide those who take the Challenge with a
new perspective and greater understanding.

SNAP FACTS

  • Over 47 million low-income Americans participate in SNAP to help purchase food.
  • 76% of SNAP households include a child, elderly person, or a disabled person.
  • 83% of SNAP households have incomes at or below 100 percent of the poverty guideline ($19,530 for a family of 3 in 2013). These households receive 91% of all SNAP benefits.
  •  All SNAP participants will see a drop in their benefits on November 1, 2013 – the average decrease will be $36 for a family of four. Over the entire year, the average family of four will have $396 less to spend on food.

Join us for the Debrief dialogue following the SNAP Challenge. Time and location TBA.  For more information check the SNAP Events page.
